A senior living community helped people better understand the effects of Alzheimer's disease Monday in Albemarle County.

Home Instead Senior Care hosted the free workshop at the Colonnades Senior Living Community.

The workshop covered the causes, symptoms and diagnosis of Alzheimer's and other dementias. Topics included how to cope with the physical and emotional effects of the disease.

More than 5 million people in the United States are living with Alzheimer's disease.
