Shoppers in Central Virginia wanted to make sure they were among the first in line at many stores that planned on opening Thanksgiving night.
Many people in line said it was their new idea of Thanksgiving.
"Celebrate another day. It's just a meal," shopper Robert Agee said. "Have it any day. Black Friday comes once a year."
The weather on Thursday was chilly, but many braved the cold and the hoards of shoppers fighting to get the deals. Many said they were shopping for Christmas and Hanukkah gifts.
Shopper James Cave says he's made it a holiday tradition. He was in line since yesterday.
"Been doing it for the last seven years straight," he said. "First one in line every year."
