Local Dentists Want Kids' Halloween Candy

October 31, 2012

As soon as kids collect all the Halloween candy they can Wednesday night, they might want to consider giving it up.

Drs. Rice & Associates is hosting its annual candy takeback on Thursday. Every year, the dental office collects Halloween candy in exchange for $1 per pound.

All the candy collected goes to the troops overseas.

They say the program also teaches kids about dental hygiene.

"It's got two purposes -- one, to keep kids from gorging on candy and hurting their teeth, making cavities and all the other havoc sugar wrecks on them. And also, take that candy and convert it to a gift for troops overseas and give them a little bit of back home," said Dr. Jennifer Rice.

Last year, the offices collected about 400 pounds of candy.

The takeback will take place Thursday, Nov. 1, between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. at the dentists' Nellysford and Crozet locations.
