Local Doctor Receives Award For His Studies On Brain Injuries

August 20, 2013

Dr. Jeffrey T. Barth at the University of Virginia Medical Center wants to help reduce the trauma resulting from concussions or brain injuries. For many people in the military, concussions come very often and are sometimes left untreated.

Dr. Barth explained that some soldiers receive 20 to 30 concussions from events like bomb blasts that occur while in the line of duty.

If multiple concussions happen there is a risk that they could suffer from Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).

CTE is in the same family as Alzheimer’s disease.

Earlier in the month, Dr. Barth received an award for his studies on the causes of CTE, and while he is honored by his award, he is also very concerned for the mental health of our military personnel.

“I have dedicated my life to helping people go through an appropriate recovery,” says Dr. Barth. “We know that if you've had multiple mild head injuries, you have the potential of having more long lasting effects from those injures and I like most people want to prevent those injuries.”

Dr. Barth has been helping people with brain injuries and concussions for three decades. He began his studies by looking at brain injuries in high school and college football.

By using speech and language therapy as well as examining the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Dr. Barth hopes that he can continue treating soldiers who suffered while serving our country.
