Local Food Bank Wants To Help "Stamp Out Hunger"

May 9, 2013

The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) is hosting the 21st annual "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive this Saturday.

Every second Saturday in May, letter carriers around the nation deliver food for local food banks on what could be the largest one-day food drive in the U.S.

During the week, postal carriers will put plastic bags of residents asking them to fill the bags with food and leave them by their mailboxes.

On Saturday they will then deliver the food to local food banks.

Here in Charlottesville the Thomas Jefferson Branch of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is expecting to collect quite a bit of food from the weekend.

"For us, hopefully it will bring in 160,000 pounds of food which will help us serve the 120,000 people we do each month," says Thomas Jefferson branch manager Joseph Caputi. "Especially in the summer, which we are entering, we go into what we call the summer slump, typically when food donations slow to a crawl, so this is going to help us quite a bit."

They are asking for non-perishable foods like canned tuna, chicken, soups, vegetables and fruit. The food bank also wants the food to be shatter proof, so no glass containers please.
