Next week, local kids will be eating local and learning to make healthy food choices at the same time.
As part of Virginia Farm to School Week, next week, the Local Food Hub will supply schools with fruits, vegetables, and meat, all grown by Central Virginia Farmers.
The local food will include sweet potatoes, broccoli, and kale, apples, squash, and grass-fed beef.
Organizers say fresh produce not only introduces kids to healthy eating habits, but helps the local economy.
"By local schools investing their food dollars in...local produce, it helps the entire community. It keeps the money in the local economy, and it helps small farmers and small businesses, and we think benefits everybody," said Kristen Suokko, Executive Director of the Local Food Hub.
The Local Food Hub will also provide demonstrations and menu-planning assistance to some schools.
