Members and supporters of the mentoring group Helping Young People Evolve are giving back to the local community at its second-annual coat giveaway.
"It's a way for us to give back especially around Christmas time. It's a very cold area," HYPE founder Wes Bellamy said.
The giveaway was hosted at the First Baptist Church on West Main Street. Organizers says the project is a great way to give back to the community.
"It's wonderful to see a child put on a coat and smile or take their old coat off and switch with the new coat. That's joy," said First Baptist Church pastor Rev. Hodari Hamilton.
Bellamy says the giveaway is an effort to give back and show individuals that the community truly cares about them.
The group gave away more than 800 coats at the drive Saturday afternoon. The group plans to expand the drive beyond the commonwealth and give out more coats next Saturday in Columbia, SC.
