First we had Gray Thursday, followed by Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, then Cyber Monday. All of those days, focused on shopping.
But thousands of charities and organizations came together Tuesday in an effort to get Americans to pause their holiday spending and give back.
"This is the first year that non-profits are asking people to network through social media and start off the giving season by donating online," said AIDS/HIV Services Group executive director Peter DeMartino.
Organizations are swarming social media to promote the day. On Twitter, #GivingTuesday has been trending across the United States.
AGS is one of more than 2,000 groups taking part in Giving Tuesday. The Charlottesville non-profit has launched a social media campaign in the hopes that the nationally-celebrated day will bring some attention to its cause.
"It's also a really good opportunity to get out our message about building community," said DeMartino. "Not only for people living with HIV, but also people affected by and at risk for HIV."
DeMartino said a $25 donation provides an HIV test and counseling session. Fifty-dollars covers two life coaching sessions, at a time when some need it the most.
"The holidays are tough. They're often tough for people who have been stigmatized for HIV," said DeMartino.
ASG is also getting ready for World AIDS Day, which is December 1.
