Saturday was the first National Model Aviation Day, and the Rivanna R/C Club out of Albemarle County took to the skies to celebrate.
Dozens of hobbyists came out the old Milton Airfield off Milton Road in Albemarle County to fly their model planes and show others how to fly, too.
They invited the local Big Brothers, Big Sisters out to let the kids build and fire rockets and use the club's training planes.
"It just makes me feel happy to see the looks on these kids faces when they go home," says Rivanna R/C Club President Don Terwilleger. "They've had a positive experience, they've tried something new and hopefully some day down the road they'll pick up the hobby and enjoy it as well and pass it on to the next generation."
Rivanna R/C is one of about 200 clubs taking part in Saturday's event, which is meant to help promote the hobby and get more people involved.
They clubs next event is the Don Reed Memorial Fly-in, scheduled for mid-September.
