Albemarle County School leaders are in shock after the school shooting in Connecticut.

"Our heart goes out to them, with a horrific event, they are on our minds and in our prayers," said School Assistant Superintendent Matthew Hass.

Every year teachers and staff go through training to handle various situations, crisis plans, school evacuation, and lockdowns to be prepared.

"All of our schools have crisis plans in place that are certified by the school board and also by the Virginia Department of Education," said Haas.

Some parents will think of this incident as they pick up and drop off their kids in days to come.

"We make every provision not only that we are required to make but that we see as practical and possible to provide for the safety of their children," said Haas. "Safety is our number one priority."

It's a priority school leaders say takes a total effort.

"The key for us is really partnership in our community. It really takes a whole community to keep our schools safe and its built around relationships," said Haas.
