Following an emerging trend of new authors building a following by self publishing for popular e-readers like Amazon’s Kindle or Apple’s iPad, Charlottesville native and 2003 University of Virginia graduate Jay Paul Hodgkins recently published his first fiction novel.

"With difficult economic times leaving traditional publishers with fewer people to read more book submissions than ever, more and more great books are never finding the book shelf. At the same time, the explosion of e-readers like Kindle and Nook have made self publishing a more legitimate and successful route for many young authors to follow," he said.

Written and edited over months of long nights and weekends in Ivy, Va., Hodgkins drew much of his inspiration for Colin Rose: At Magic’s Dawn, a young adult fantasy fiction novel, from hiking the area’s scenic Blue Ridge mountains.

Seven years as a journalist, including three at SNL Financial in downtown Charlottesville, writing thousands of words per day, prepared Hodgkins for the challenge of writing his first novel.

"Colin Rose will take readers on an adventure across the globe -- an Amazing Race for a small group of young wizards running out of time before magic throws everything into chaos," Hodgkins said. "Colin will reveal a fantastic world of magic, but his adventure will also remind readers how magical many natural habitats on earth already are."
