Last week's announcement that the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation will continue to fund Planned Parenthood was great news for the health center in Charlottesville.
"We're just ecstatic that we will be able to offer those preventative services to the women in the community that need them," said Keiana Mayfield.
Virginia lawmakers recently passed legislation that would end public funding for abortions through Medicaid. In December, Governor Bob McDonnell signed new regulations requiring existing abortion clinics to meet the same strict building standards as new hospital construction.
"The legislation has gotten to be so conservative that it's going in an anti-women's health direction," said Mayfield.
However, employees of the Pregnancy Centers of Central Virginia say the new regulations are protecting women's health.
Plan Parenthood provides health care services such as pregnancy testing, emergency contraceptive, blood pressure screening and provide nearly 300 breast exams each year.
