Madison County investigators are looking into a deadly fire that happened early Monday morning on Whipperwill Road in the Etlan area.
"[It was the] foothills of the mountains, so access was somewhat limited by trucks. The lines had to be advanced by hand up to the scene of the barn because we couldn't access the barn itself by vehicle," said Troy Coppage, Madison County Fire Chief.
CBS19 is told that one woman's remains were found inside a barn. Fire investigators say they're calling the fire suspicious.
"There was suspicion that someone could be in the building so we extinguished the fire and did find an occupant," said Chief Coppage.
The remains were recovered and have been taken to the Virginia State Medical Examiner's Office in Manassas in order to confirm the identity as well as the cause of death.
Regarding the fire itself, the investigation is ongoing and the cause and origin have not been determined.
Officials say the barn as well as the two vehicles parked nearby are total losses.
Anyone with information about this incident are asked to contact the Madison County Sheriff's Office at 540-948-5161.
