Man Dies After Arrest in Orange Co.

Sept. 13, 2013

A Charlottesville man is dead after swallowing drugs while leading Orange County deputies on a chase.

Investigators from the Orange County Sheriff's Department identified the suspect as 34-year-old Gerard Cowherd.

They say Cowherd was trying to get away from deputies south of Gordonsville on Thursday afternoon.

Deputies were able to stop the vehicle Cowherd was driving, and arrest him. About 20 minutes later, Cowherd told the deputies that he had ingested illegal drugs.

Emergency crews were called, and Cowherd was transported to a hospital where he later died.

An autopsy is being conducted on Friday.
