An Albemarle County man originally charged with involuntary manslaughter has taken a plea deal for a lesser charge.

Joseph Martin Terry III, 32, was originally facing a felony involuntary manslaughter charge in the death of Vincent Shifflett.

Terry pleaded guilty in court to a reduced charge of misdemeanor assault on Thursday.

Police say Terry and Shifflett got into a fight outside the Riverside North restaurant and bar in June. It is believed that Terry hit Shifflett, knocking him to the ground.

The medical examiner determined Shifflett died from an aneurism, caused by the fight.

Officials say the charge was reduced because Terry did not intend to kill Shifflett.

Terry will serve a year in jail on the new charge.
