One man is dead after jumping from the canal bridge on Moody Town Road in Louisa County on Tuesday.
Investigators say a 55-year-old man and 28-year-old man, both from Spotsylvania County, were driving around the region and drinking alcoholic beverages.
At around 5 p.m., the two parked the car near the bridge over Lake Anna. The sheriff's office reports they walked past two signs that clearly state "No Jumping or Fishing From Bridge."
The older man then climbed on the guardrail at the bridge and challenged the younger man to jump with him. On the count of three, the 55-year-old jumped into the waters of Lank Anna below, but the 28-year-old did not.
After a period of time, the older man surfaced on the other side of the bridge, but was motionless. His friend waded into the water and pulled the man to shore.
The younger man called 911 and began CPR. Rescue personnel arrived seven minutes later and unsuccessfully continued CPR. The older male was pronounced dead at 5:27 p.m. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
"Imagine the grief that the surviving male will carry with him from this point forward," said Detective Mark A. Stanton. "Imagine the grief of the victim’s family. Imagine the grief of the friends he has left behind. All of this…due to his desire to break a rule here and there. He paid for it with his life. This person 'thought' that he would get away with it, but sadly did not…it was only his decision."
The sheriff's office said this incident should serve as a reminder of how dangerous bridge jumping can be.
