Albemarle County Police have identified the driver as Wesley Evans, of Schuyler. They say his 1997 Ford Aspire was traveling east in the 3600 block of Plank Road when it swerved off the road and hit a tree.
Evans, 34, has been charged with DUI in the crash. Police say alcohol was a factor in the crash, and it does not appear Evans was wearing a seat belt.
He was airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. He is expected to be okay.

A man is recovering at the University of Virginia Medical Center Friday morning after a single car crash. Albemarle County Police say he was trapped inside his car after crashing into a tree on Plank Road.
Police say they first heard about the accident after midnight Friday morning. It happened about four miles east of Route 29 on Plank Road near the intersection with Cove Garden Road.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers said the man was partially ejected from the car and needed immediate rescue. Crews used the Jaws of Life to cut him out of the car and called in emergency helicopter, Pegasus, to transport him to the UVa Medical Center. The condition of the driver is not being released.
Police said the man was the only one in the car and there were no other vehicles involved in the accident. Plank Road was closed down for several hours Friday morning, but reopened to drivers around 4 a.m.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, and officers say charges are pending.
