Martha Jefferson Healthwise: Cancer Survivor Art Show

Nov. 20, 2013

Cancer survivors are using art to help them heal. In this week's Martha Jefferson Healthwise report, CBS19's Stephanie Satchell found out how these artists are using their paintings to make a difference for themselves and visitors at the hospital.

If you walk down one of the main halls at Martha Jefferson Hospital, you'll find several new paintings. They're part of the "Cancer Survivor Art Show."

"My work that is on display right now is about peace, tranquility and quiet and I hope that the patients at Martha Jefferson and the guests that are here have that experience when they look at my work," said Jo Anne Currie, Artist and Cancer Survivor.

Jo Anne Currie painted three paintings for the display.

"Because of what I've experienced as a cancer survivor and feeling stressed, I think it's important to have things to look at and have things around that make us feel quiet and peaceful," said Currie.

Each painting on display is different. You can find one with hay bales, another with a country store. There's even one painting with a castle.

These artists are using their talent to help them get through their diagnosis and treatment at the hospital's cancer center.

"I see the art show as part of the healing process for patients. When someone is able to do what they love to do and share it with people, it opens hearts and it allows people to think about their own creative goals in life," said Ann Atwell, Oncology Social Worker, Martha Jefferson Hospital.

"When I paint, I'm very happy and I forget everything. I just get into my painting and look at nature and it's just very peaceful," said Currie.
