Some people opt for weight loss or bariatric surgery when diet or exercise don't produce the results they're looking for, but now there's a new weight loss procedure offered at Martha Jefferson Hospital. It's called the gastric sleeve.

The procedure is an alternative to the gastric band or gastric bypass surgery. In a gastric bypass surgery, the intestines are rearranged and the stomach is made into a small pouch, limiting food absorption and what the patient can eat; but nothing is actually removed from the body.

With the gastric sleeve, a large portion of the stomach is removed and the remainder is shaped into a tube.

Dr. Jayme Stokes, with Martha Jefferson Surgical Associates, says the surgery is a great option for weight loss and has many benefits including lower risks after surgery including, "correcting the comorbidities or the associated diseases with obesity such as diabetes and hypertension."

Dr. Stokes describes it as a tool to kick start a change in lifestyle and behavior that ultimately makes patients successful in their weight loss.

If you are considering weight loss surgery, the first step is to attend an information session, where more is shared about the procedures offered at Martha Jefferson.

The sessions are free, and you can register by calling Health Connection at (434) 654-7009.
