A new solution is now available for men suffering from symptoms of an enlarged prostate.
The procedure is called laser enucleation and Martha Jefferson Hospital is the only facility in Central Virginia offering the fix.
The surgery involves un-clogging the prostate by removing the prostate tissue causing the blockage.
Dr. Frazier Fortenberry, an Urologist at Martha Jefferson is the only doctor in Central Virginia performing the operation.
"We've been doing the procedures for years to eliminate that obstruction, but the laser enucleation is the most advanced method to eliminate that obstruction," he says.
In addition to being the most advanced treatment, Dr.Fortenberry says there are many advantages to this new laser, including a lower risk of bleeding than traditional methods and the opportunity to get home sooner. Both of these advantages make for a less invasive procedure that allows patients to recover more quickly.
