Martha Jefferson Healthwise: MJ8K Run and 4k Walk

Feb. 26, 2014

In just a few weeks, lots of feet will be hitting the pavement in Charlottesville for a good cause.

Martha Jefferson Hospital is sponsoring its 18th Annual MJ8K Run and 4K Walk on March 15th.

Proceeds for this year's event will benefit the hospital's lung cancer screening outreach program.

Doctors say lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States and is responsible for more deaths annually than breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers combined.

Race co-directors Audrey and Alec Lorenzoni say they're looking forward to a big turnout and what those donations will mean for people in need.

"It's a really cool thing to be a part of and just seeing the benefits and to be able to help people that can't provide for themselves. Outreach is always a great thing and I'm a huge supporter of that," said Audrey Lorenzoni.

For the first time in nearly 20 years, the race course is changing. Runners and walkers will be starting and finishing at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion on the Downtown Mall.

They'll be going through the same neighborhoods that they've traveled in years past but this time they'll be walking and running in the reverse direction.

"I've done it a couple of times. I definitely think it's still challenging. [It's] still hilly and prepares you for the10-miler but I think it's a little easier," said Alec Lorenzoni.

The race is on Saturday, March 15, at 8:00 a.m.

They'll also have a kids dash following the 8K Run and 4K walk. Organizers are expecting about 750 people to attend.
