Martha Jefferson Healthwise: Martha's Closet

A new Martha Jefferson Initiative is aiming to help provide clothing for patients in the emergency department.
It's called Martha's Closet.

When you're brought into the emergency department, you may not always be able to *leave wearing the same clothes. You could get sick or the outfit may need to be taken off to better treat you.

"We have patients who have had accidents and have to have their clothes removed,'" said Dee Ralston, Medical Imaging.

Now Martha Jefferson Hospital has a new program called Martha's Closet and it helps dress those patients when they're being discharged.

"Sweat pants and shorts and shirts and t-shirts of multiple sizes so they could choose what they wanted" said Susie McConnell

Clothes are available to any patient who needs them. A nurse or hospital employee from the emergency department just has to sign out each garment.

"So, having the Martha's Closet available is great for patients who come in without care givers or someone to provide with the extra clothes," said Ralston.

The hospital even held a clothes drive to help them build up the inventory in their closet.

"It's just a great group of people who care about the patients who come into the hospital and want to provide those special touches that show that we can care about the patients here," said McConnell.

They say the reason behind the idea is just making patients feel more at ease when they need it most.
