Diabetes can be a difficult disease to manage, but with help from a support group at Blue Ridge Internal Medicine, diabetes patients are winning the fight for their health.

Jane Varga, a patient at Blue Ridge Internal Medicine, says it's a tough thing to keep up with because "you don't really feel anything with a lot of diabetes situations."

Varga was diagnosed four years ago and says making the right health decisions has been difficult.

"I really need to pay more attention to what I'm doing every day, each meal, each snack, everything I have to pay attention to and also to exercise more and to burn that in my brain" says Varga.

But Varga is getting a handle on her diabetes symptoms with the help of a new diabetes support group.

Lindsay Aguero, a nurse practitioner, says the team started the classes because they wanted to improve the outcomes for their patients, and they know that "there's more than just medicine to managing diabetes, it's about learning how to eat healthy, how to exercise to get in better health."

Group members get exercise, sleep and nutrition tips, but most importantly support from each other.

Doctors recommend patients to be part of this group, the group meets once every month.
