Martha Jefferson Healthwise: School Backpacks

July 31, 2013

If you plan to go "back to school" shopping during the upcoming tax-free holiday, you may want to pay extra attention to the kind of back pack your child picks out.

Dr. Matthew Panzarella of Martha Jefferson Hospital is encouraging parents to look for a few different features when choosing a new backpack.

He suggests a bag with two wide shoulder straps to help distribute the weight, one that fits their body size, one with a waist strap or a rolling backpack.

He says it's important to have those features because if not it could lead to medical problems in the future.

"There's been injuries from kids wearing backpacks that are too heavy and are worn incorrectly such as back strain. Some kids can get some numbness or tingling into their arms or legs from the weight of the back pack on their spine," Dr. Matthew Panzarella, Martha Jefferson Hospital.

Dr. Panzarella also recommends limiting the weight in your child's backpack to about 10-15 percent of their body weight.
