Mental Health Report Shows 20% of Children Affected Each Year

May 22, 2013

A recent report released by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) shows that 20% of children living in the United States experiences a mental health disorder each year. That's one per every five children, about 7 million to 12 million nationwide.

The study also shows that 21% of the children affected by a mental health disorder are actually receiving treatment. That is based on factors like, socioeconomic factors and a decrease in medical students going into the children's mental health field.

The most common amongst these disorders is Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Dr. Michael Kofler from UVa.'s Children Learning Center spoke about the importance of the study.

"There are a lot of children with ADHD that are not getting access to the mental health services that they need and I think this type of report is one that can try and help get the word out," says Kofler.

This type of report is actually the first of it's kind that looks at all of the different mental health disorders in children in the US from 2005 to 2011. Most reports only show one specific disorder.

"The key is getting some kind of evaluation as early as possible," says Roger Burket, MD from the Childhood Development Disorder Clinic in Charlottesville. "Sometimes it's through talking treatments, other times it's medication, it just depends on the situation."

Other common mental disorders include depression, autism and Tourrette's syndrome.
