WASHINGTON (AP) - A Metro spokeswoman says one contractor died and two Metro employees were injured in an early morning welding accident in a Red Line subway tunnel between Union Station and the Judiciary Square stop.

Spokeswoman Caroline Lukas told The Associated Press the contractor died at a hospital after the early Sunday accident and the two others were in serious condition with non-life threatening injuries.

The Washinton Post said an explosion and fire broke out in a tunnel were major rebuilding work was ongoing. Lukas said it was not a major fire and was put out by hand-held extinguishers.

"The Red Line will continue to be shut down and free shuttle bus service provided as it was Saturday," she said.

She says all lines would operate normally Monday.
