Middle School Student Honored as Kid Hero

May 30, 2014

One local middle school student is being recognized for his respect for other students, and ability to help them through situations.

Community Public Charter School student Nik Schmidt is the recipient of the 2014 Nancy Coates Walker Kid Hero Award.

"He's encouraged students, helped out in stressful situations, really acting as a mediator between himself and other people," said Nancy Walker, the award's namesake.

For the past three years, the Sexual Assault Resource Agency has honored a student who helps stand up to bullies, but is modest about their efforts. Nik's teachers nominated him because they say he embodies those characteristics.

Nik, however, was shocked by the award and says that he just tries to show respect for all of this classmates and teachers.

"I've done a lot this year, worked my hardest and try to meet new people," said Nik.

NIK is an avid basketball player and teachers say he helped encourage other students to play. As part of his award he was given five basketball lessons with a coach from Virginia Basketball Academy, so he can improve him game.
