Middle School Students Learn About Careers in STEM

June 20, 2014

Some middle school students had a chance to learn first-hand what careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) can be like from some engineers and even some astronauts.

The Exxon Mobile Bernard Harris Summer Camp gave kids an opportunity to work with engineers and scientists on some experiments.

Students also had a chance to make rockets and launch them into the air.

University of Virginia Professor and Astronaut Katherine Thornton says this is enough to get kids thinking about STEM careers.

“They may not understand everything about it. Maybe they don’t understand the trigonometry of how they measure the altitudes, but they know now why they want to do that why they want to learn that. So it gives them a reason to want to know,” Professor Thornton.

Students also attended talks with engineers who told them why they chose careers in science and engineering.
