A ten-month-old black lab named Beta, is much more than a pet to Kylie Calvert. The 11-year-old has diabetes, and depends on her service dog to help monitor her blood sugar levels. Beta was sent from their home in Texas to Virginia earlier this month for some additional training with an organization called Warren Retrievers.
On March 9th, the Calvert family learned their beloved dog had disappeared. The dog was last seen with a trainer from Warren Retrievers in the Key West neighborhood, until she was dropped off at the SPCA over the weekend. Albemarle County police aren't releasing many details surrounding the dog's disappearance.
"At this point, it's an ongoing investigation," said Carter Johnson, the public information officer for Albemarle County police department. "We did receive some allegations that maybe there was misconduct or perhaps the dog was stolen."
According to Johnson, a detective has been assigned to the case. "The investigation is ongoing and right now we're just continuing to follow leads."
Dan Warren, the owner of Warren Retrievers, the organization responsible for the dog, called Beta's disappearance "an unfortunate event". Warren said he has not been in contact with the family who owned Beta, or with the trainer last seen with Beta, in several days. But Warren said he sympathized with the Calverts about their missing dog.
"This child has been really dependent on her service dog, and was very distraught I"m sure," Warren said.
Police say the investigation could result in felony charges. "If the detectives determine there was criminal activity, larceny of a dog is a felony, so it could lead to felony charges," Johnson said.
As the details around Beta's disappearance and discovery remain unclear, there is one thing all parties say they agree on; that Beta is home safe with her family.
