Governor Bob McDonnell observed a moment of silence at Capitol Square in Richmond.
The bell tolled 26 times in honor of each of the students and teachers that were killed a week ago in Connecticut.
The ceremony had added significance in the Richmond area where schools have been put on edge because of threats this week. Students say they're trying to stay focused on school work.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm nervous, but I don't really think about it a lot," said Christopher Lee. "I keep thinking about the future ahead of me."
Police have said the rumors of violence were not substantiated.
