Monticello Offers Holiday Tour After Dark

December 23, 2013

Monticello is giving visitors an inside look at what Christmas was like for Thomas Jefferson.

Limited-time evening tours offer the chance to see the historical home after dark, in a holiday setting.

But guests won't be seeing twinkling lights and decked out Christmas trees. Holiday celebrations were more modest in Jefferson's time.

"I kind of expected Christmas lights, and we found out that wasn't the case back in the day," said tour member Janice Day.

Christmas trees and colorful lights were not yet traditions, but tour guides say Jefferson might have had a "kissing ball" hanging at Monticello, similar to today's mistletoe. Other common threads include good food and good music.

The holiday evening tour is quick moving so visitors have enough time to travel upstairs to see the dome room -- a space not accessible during all regular tours.

The special tour gives visitors an image of what Jefferson's holiday home was like, from a new perspective.

Tours will continue December 26th through the 30th. For more information about the tours and times, click HERE.
