Morning Rain, Freezing Rain Make for Slick Roads in Central Va.

Jan. 10, 2014

Rain and freezing rain made for slick conditions on roads in Albemarle, Fauquier, Fluvanna and Louisa counties Friday morning.

A fatal crash closed Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) approximately 1.5 miles south of Route 20 (Constitution Highway), near Barboursville in Orange County. Road crews placed a traffic detour while emergency personnel worked the accident.

Lawrence Shifflett, 67, of Barboursville died on scene of the crash. Officials say the accident was caused by ice on the road.

Police have responded to dozens of crashes throughout the area. Albemarle Co. Police say they responded to 30 crashes between 5:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., while Charlottesville Police have been called out to two.

Officials with the Virginia Department of Transportation say crews continue to monitor conditions and are treating roads as necessary.

Drivers are being advised to reduce speed and allow extra travel time.
