Move-In Weekend Welcomes 3,515 New Students to UVa

August 23, 2013

This year the University of Virginia is expecting 6,000 students to make their way back on grounds throughout the weekend, but Friday, first years have arrived and are unloading their cars to get settled into their dorms.

The university is glad to welcome in the largest first year class in history, 3,515 students. Each of them has aspirations of doing great things with their time at UVa.

"I want to be a lawyer so I plan to double major in economics and government," says Lauren Ierardi.

Ierardi is from Fairfax County in Virginia, is an only child. Her mother is sad to see her go.

"It’s horrible, it's horrible but it's a great thing, we couldn't have asked for anything better than UVa," says Melanie Ierardi.

Earlier today they packed up the car and made their way down to grounds.

"We were able to just cram everything in and on top and able to make it work," says Ierardi.

Hannah Chi came down from Maryland with her family.

"I'm super nervous. I didn't even sleep last night, but I'm really excited," says Chi. "I saw my roommate's name is crossed off so I guess I'll meet her in two minutes."

Chi got accepted to six other schools but knew that UVa was the one she would call home.

"Everyone says once you visit your school you just kind of know and as soon as I visited UVa," says Chi. "I just got a feeling of this is where I have to go, so I think I just kind of knew, I don't know what it was about UVa, but it just felt right."

University officials are pretty excited about this year and explained that this new class is very diverse. They have students from the Charlottesville area to as far as Ghana stepping on grounds anxious to begin a new chapter in life.
