Mumps at James Madison University

April 4, 2013

A number of colleges in Virginia have been reporting cases of the mumps on their campuses.

James Madison University (JMU) is now one of those campuses affected by the disease.

JMU has one confirmed case of the mumps that is being treated.

In Virginia, more than 45 cases of the mumps have been reported so far.

The virus is spread by close contact to an in infected person. That is why college campuses are a good breeding ground for the disease.

Some of the signs for the disease include swollen salivary glands, fever, and pain while chewing.

JMU students didn’t seem to be too worried about the possible outbreak.

“On the level of my concern, it’s not that high,” said Troy Fultz, a student at JMU. “Like you said, there's only been one case, so I haven't heard that much about it. I just read an article about it and that's about it. So I'm not too concerned.”

There are a few things that you can do to prevent the spread of mumps. Health workers suggest washing your hands frequently and avoid sharing drinks or eating utensils.
