Officials says 1 crewman among 4 rescued in crash of MH-53E helicopter off Virginia's coast has died.

Search and rescue crews are still looking for one more person at sea that was aboard the helicopter.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - The Coast Guard says four of five people aboard a Navy helicopter that went down in the Atlantic off Virginia have been rescued.

Petty Officer David Weydert says the search continued for the fifth person. Two Coast Guard cutters were racing to the scene about 18 miles off the Virginia coast.

A Navy helicopter rescued the four. Their conditions are not known.

The helicopter has been identified by the Navy as an MH-53-E. According to the Naval Air Systems Command website, the aircraft performs airborne mine countermeasures and onboard delivery missions. It holds a crew of up to eight, including two pilots and is capable of speeds of more than 170 miles per hour.


BREAKING:

The U.S. Coast Guard has confirmed that a Marine helicopter has gone down 18 miles off the Virginia Beach coast.

Petty Officer David Weydert says the helicopter was reported down about 11 a.m. Wednesday. He said there was no immediate word on any casualties.

According to the U.S. Navy twitter account, a CH-53E is the helicopter involved.

Weydert said two Coast Guard vessels were responding to the crash site, and one was within 3 miles of where the helicopter went down.
