NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - The Navy has relieved a guided missile destroyer's executive officer and top enlisted sailor of their duties following an investigation of a hazing incident.

U.S. Fleet Forces Command spokeswoman Reann Mommsen tells The Virginian-Pilot that Cmdr. Kenneth Rice and Command Master Chief Petty Officer Stephen Vandergrifft knew about the incident. But she says they didn't' take any action.

An investigation by Destroyer Squadron 28 found that more than a dozen female sailors aboard the Jason Dunham were forced to march in formation while carrying buckets of human waste. The incident occurred Oct. 15 at Norfolk Naval Station.

Rice and Vandergrifft were relieved of their duties on Friday.

Mommsen says other lower-ranking sailors have been disciplined.
