Jury selection started on Monday for the corruption trial of former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife Maureen. 8 men and 4 women have been selected to be on that jury. Opening arguments start Tuesday. The trial is expected to last 5 weeks.
VIRGINIA SAME-SEX MARRIAGE BAN:
A three-judge panel of the 4-th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond ruled Virginia's same-sex marriage ban is unconstitutional. The Virginia case is one of several that could go to the Supreme Court. Opponents have 21 days to appeal the ruling before it is set in stone.
DEATH OF “BUBBIE” TOOMBS:
A grand jury certified charges against Billy Joe Lee and Tina Marie Toombs for the death of “Bubbie” Toombs. Billy Joe Lee is facing first degree murder. Prosecutors say he fired the deadly shot. Both Lee and Toombs are expected back in court in August.
REGIONAL DISPARITY IN VIRGINIA:
According to the Weldon Center for Public Service, the population in central Virginia has grown by more than 16,000 people in 3 years, average income is $54,000, and Albemarle and Greene Counties have the lowest unemployment rates at 3.1%.
A new Albemarle County program starting August 1st will make it so Albemarle residents will no longer receive a bill after being picked up in an ambulance. Their insurance will be billed for the trip instead. The service will also be free for residents without insurance.
