TREE FALLS ON FARMERS MARKET:
Just before 4 pm Thursday part of a tree fell on a farmers market on Hospital Drive at U.Va. between the Old Medical Building and the U.Va. lawn. 5 people were injured in the accident and at least three tents were crushed. Emergency crews say tree rot might be to blame.
MILITARIZATION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT:
Violent protests continue in Ferguson, Missouri following the shooting death of a black, unarmed teenager by a white police officer. John Whitehead of the Rutherfords Institute says this points to a larger issue at hand in cities across the country: the militarization of law enforcement.
LAKE MONTICELLO EXXON SELLING CHEAP GAS:
The Exxon station at Lake Monticello celebrated its new renovations today by selling gas for $1.99 a gallon. The special sale happened Thursday morning. The sale follows a larger trend nationwide of gas prices steadily decreasing.
ELK HILL SCHOOL FINDS NEW LOCATION:
Elk Hill School is now in the old National Businesses College building on route 29 in Charlottesville, after searching for a location for two years. School in the new building for the 34 students enrolled starts August 25th.
MCDONNELL TRIAL WEEK THREE:
The prosecution rested its case Thursday in the federal corruption trial against former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife Maureen. The jury will take a break on Friday, and will begin hearing the defenses’ arguments on Monday.
