Nelson County Cleans Up After Storm

June 13, 2013

Nelson County is cleaning up after Thursday's storms toppled trees and took down power lines.

Chief Eddie Embrey of the Faber Volunteer Fire Department estimates winds reached 75 miles an hour, causing more damage than a severe storm about a year ago.

"The area that's been hit by this storm is worse than what the derecho was," said Embrey.

A five-mile stretch about a mile wide in the Rockfish Depot and Faber areas sustained the most damage.

"We've got crews on several areas, on several roads working, and we're trying to get everything clean and open just as soon as we can," said Kenneth Burnley of the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The strong winds knocked a tree over and onto Charlie Goranson's house.

"It started as a regular thunderstorm and then it picked up and it really started howling for a few minutes. Trees were going at a 45 degree angle, branches flying everywhere," said Goranson. "I have never seen anything like this before, and I've been through a hurricane before. This was worse."

The storm spared Bob Bryant's home, but downed trees now dot his property.

"The upper section of my farm has suffered probably $10,000 to $15,000 worth of damage," said Bryant.

Bryant is still cleaning up the damage left by the derecho that hit the area last summer.

"We're kind of used to this kind of thing," said Bryant. "Living in the country you have to expect the unexpected."

Despite the severe weather, no injuries have been reported.
