Nelson County Man Facing Charges of Attempted Capital Murder

May 29, 2012

A Shipman man is facing charges of attempted capital murder of a police officer after allegedly trying to drive off with a deputy hanging from the side of the car.

Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks says 26-year-old Joshua Painter was told to get out of his car after being pulled over earlier this month on High Peak Lane.

Investigators say Painter tried to drive off with the deputy hanging from the side of the car and holding onto the steering wheel. Painter was taken into custody after crashing into a tree. His bond hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.

Deputies found methamphetamine and other drug paraphernalia in the car. The deputy is expected to be fine.
