Charlottesville's first art park is almost ready to open for the public.

Volunteers gathered today at the soon-to-be art park next to the IX Building to paint and build.

The art park is scheduled to open next Sunday, May 25, with a kick-off celebration that will include a Rainbow Rush 5K, live music and food trucks.

You can expect plenty of artistic activities that are all designed to bring the community together.

“What this park does is it provides a public space for everybody in neighboring communities to come and share,” says Brian Wimer, organizer for the art park. “Nothing is expected of you here.”

“You don't have to pay to be here, you just have to come and enjoy it.”

Sunday's event is free and open to the public, but if you want to register for the 5K you can click on the link under the picture.
