New Child Care Facility Underway for UVa Health System

December 12, 2012

Construction is underway for a new child care facility for the University of Virginia Physicians Group. When the center is complete, it will serve UVa. Health System faculty and staff and will accommodate up to 150 kids.

It's something CEO Brad Haws says employees have been asking for.

"A lot of this came from some surveys we did with our faculty and our staff," said Haws. "They indicated that, when they came here, they had assumed child care would be available, but there was a real lack of child care availability."

There have been long waiting lists at existing child care facilities, like the one operated by the medical center, which has forced some parents to split up where they send their kids.

"We have situations where maybe one child can get into the child care center but the next sibling can't," Haws said.

The hope is that the new center will make it easier on parents by allowing their children to attend the same daycare. It will also operate with extended hours to better accommodate the sometimes unusual schedules of physicians.

But some folks who live near the construction zone are concerned the center will complicate their commutes. Albemarle County resident K.C. Clark's house is visible from the site. He said he and his neighbors are worried that the child care center will drive even more traffic to what he said is an already congested area.

The plans for the center call for one entrance on Whitewood Road and another entrance on Oak Forest Drive.

"Of course we welcome a daycare center," said Clark. "But one thing that we don't welcome is an entrance onto Oak Forest Drive."

Clark said that area already gets crowded with school buses. He said his neighbors fear parents unloading up to 150 small children in the early morning hours will only complicate the road.

Clark said he would like to see the entrance on Oak Forest Drive moved to another location. He suggested relocating it to an acceleration lane on Whitewood Road, where the first entrance will be located.

The architect working on the project said there are no plans to reroute the entry and exit points.

Construction is expected to be complete in late 2013.
