New Convenience Centers in the Works in Albemarle County

October 10, 2013

Albemarle County is trying to come up with a better way for residents to dump their trash and recycling. Right now residents can get their trash collected by commercial trash haulers or they can travel to the landfill in Ivy.

People living around Albemarle County want an easier way to do it and officials have come up with three convenience centers in areas around the county.

“I would think a recycling center would be helpful to the overall improvement in recycling race which is necessary really,” says Ron Krauss, a Fluvanna Co. resident who comes out to the McIntire Recycling Facility to dump his cardboard and magazines.

“We need a landfill in the county,” says Eddie Mawyer from Keene. “We used to have one and it's a shame they shut it down.”

The county came up with service areas that they fell would benefit the most residents. One of the proposed sites is in Keene near the old landfill.

“We also came up with a list of criteria of how we would select the site,” says Mark Graham, Director of Community Development for Albemarle Co. “Does it have a lot of residences nearby, thinking that people don’t want to live right next to the things, but also does it have utilities available, does it have good road frontage, does the county own the property.”

If the county does own the property, like the site out in Keene, then the price would be significantly lower. The county pays $435,000 to the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority for their services at the Ivy landfill, but the county hopes these three centers will cut those costs.

“It would be smaller facilities; they are designed only to handle the trash generated by residences, not to take the trash from commercial haulers or businesses,” says Graham. “When we look at it, it looks like a very cost competitive solution.”
