Albemarle County says the red light cameras at Rio Road have been so effective that they want to add another one. This time, it will be on Pantops at the intersection of Richmond and Stony Point Road.

For Supervisors, the proof is in the numbers. County police report the Rio Road cameras have been effective in cutting down on accidents and red light runners so they want to expand.

As of July 26, the Rio Road cameras at the intersection with Route 29 have taken 16,382 pictures since activation in December 2010. That has resulted in 9,909 tickets amounting to $137,000 for the county.

"They're busy intersections and a high number of accidents. That's what we tried to look at is those intersections we could help to improve the number of accidents that are very busy and we have a lot of running of the red lights," said Ken Boyd, Albemarle County Supervisor.

Redflex is the company that installs and monitors the cameras and it takes on the preliminary costs of putting them up. Then the company takes a small portion from the ticket revenues to continue the operation.

“Our hope was that from the very beginning, we'd get to the point where it was a losing proposition and we could take them out, but then we would have no running of red lights which would be what we'd ultimately like to achieve,” said Boyd.

Supervisors will discuss the new cameras on Wednesday. If approved, they could be up by the end of the year.

"We'll probably evaluate the two of them together and decide where we go from there," said Boyd.

By law, the county can put up a camera at one intersection per 10,000 people. With 100,000 people in the county, that leaves the roads open for eight more lights in the future.
