The State Board of Elections (SBE) is making it easier to register to vote in the Commonwealth.

On Tuesday, the SBE, in partnership with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), launched online voter registration. Eligible Virginians will now be able to submit a voter registration application or update their registration information online.

In order to sign up on the site, you must provide your Virginia DMV customer identifier number, which is displayed on DMV issued identification cards or Driver’s Licenses. If you don’t have a DMV customer identifier, you can fill out the application online, then print and return the completed application to the voter registration office.

You will be notified directly via mail by the local voter registration office once an application has been processed.

Charlottesville's registrar, Sheri Iachetta, says this new step from the SBE will make the registration process easier for a lot of people.

"We have to physically cut [paper applications] down, we have to touch every one of them, so it's just so cumbersome," she said. "And this is exactly what needs to happen. So it's good for the voter, it's good for the voter registration offices. It's really going to streamline the process."

The SBE is encouraging all eligible residents of the Commonwealth to use the site for applying to register to vote or to update voter registration information.

Additional information is available at the SBE's website.
