New Statistics Show Crime Down In Charlottesville

May 22, 2013

Charlottesville is becoming safer, according to crime statistics released this week.

Several violent crimes were down in 2012 compared to 2011. The overall crime rate fell six percent.

Rapes were down 29percent in Charlottesville, while other forcible sex offenses dropped 26 percent. Robberies in the area fell 17 percent.

Charlottesville Police Lieutenant Ronnie Roberts says officers are working harder to prevent crimes, instead of just responding to them.

"We began to look at that and focus on a particular area where they are happening at, by crime trends, and of course those cases that have been reported and strategically locating officers in those areas to work on a special project."

The news wasn't all good, though.

The number of aggravated assaults went up 34 percent, and burglaries increased 38 percent.

Statewide, Virginia experienced a three percent decline in murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault.

Fraud offenses in the Commonwealth increased by 7.5 percent when compared to 2011.
