A nutritional supplement available over-the-counter may offer protection from Alzheimer's Disease.
Researchers at UVa and Northwestern University were studying the effectiveness of chiro-inositol, a compound that occurs naturally in certain foods.
The compound protects the brain from certain toxins, which damage and kill neurons and is believed to be responsible for Alzheimer's.
Professor of Pharmacology Joseph Larner says, "If we understand the fundamental mechanism of why there's a lack in the body of this inositol, we will begin to understand the genetic basis, and we're working on this at the present time."
Researchers are calling for further investigation, including a clinical trial in humans and further development of drugs containing the compound.
