Organizers of First Night Virginia are prepping the place where hundreds of people will spend the last few seconds of 2012.
Last year, the alternative New Year's Eve celebration featured a laser show at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion. This year, you'll have to head to the opposite end of the Downtown Mall if you want to count down to midnight with the crowd.
Crews are working to transform the ice rink at Main Street Area into one big dance floor.
"It's going to be sort of a 70's disco," said Brett Cassis of All Stage & Sound, Inc. "It's going to have the disco balls, lights and it's going to be a fun disco party."
Cassis one of the people working to prep the rink for Monday's event. He said crews were decorating the large space with balloons late into the evening Thursday. Some of those balloon will be released onto the dance floor as the disco ball drops at midnight.
Cassis said organizers are expecting about 1,800 to celebrate inside Main Street Arena, where band Groove Train will perform for the crowd.
Many more will be outside the arena where organizers plan to have a large screen airing the ball drop in Times Square in New York City.
