New Owners Laying Off 22 Keswick Employees

January 17, 2012

An Orient-Express spokesperson has confirmed that 22 current Keswick Hall employees are being laid off.

In an email to CBS19 Tuesday, the spokesperson wrote, "The new owners of Keswick Hall have assessed current staffing levels at the hotel and determined that they will not be renewing the contracts of 22 members of staff when they assume ownership of the property." She continued, saying the employees have been notified of the decision.

The Hook reported the new owner will be William H. "Bill" Goodwin Jr., a businessman and philanthropist who owns the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond as well as resorts in Hilton Head and Kiawah Island. However, that has been unconfirmed by current the ownership and management team.

The ownership group of the award-winning luxury hotel, Orient Express Hotels Ltd., entered into a purchase agreement with the buyer earlier this month. Orient Express will continue to operate Keswick Hall, Keswick Club and Keswick Estate until the sale is complete, which is expected to be by Jan. 31.
