Dozens of nursing assistants were honored Tuesday evening during the "At the Heart of Caring" event at the Holiday Inn on Emmett Street.
More than 200 nursing assistants and their supporters received recognition for their work in what is often an overlooked field.
Nursing assistants provide 80% to 90% of hands-on care in hospitals and long-term care facilities.
"Their supervisors and people looking after the CNS's often do not recognize the really hard work that they do," said Abby Hochstetler, CNA supervisor and activities director at Mountain View Nursing Home. "They have a tremendously difficult job. This is sort of just to recognize them and give them a boost of energy and inspiration."
The event was sponsored by the UVa Medical Center, JABA, Hospice of the Piedmont, several local nursing homes and others.
This was the 16th year of the event.
